SNC-LAVALIN WINNER OF A 2003 PCI DESIGN AWARD
SNC-Lavalin has just been awarded a 2003 Design Award by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI), a Chicago-based engineering organization, for its work on the Jacques Cartier Bridge in Montreal, Canada.
The Jacques Cartier Bridge, owned by Jacques Cartier & Champlain Bridges Inc., is one of the busiest crossings in North America on a per lane basis. During 2001 and 2002, SNC-Lavalin led a consortium to entirely reconstruct the bridge’s 70-year-old deck. SNC-Lavalin was responsible for detailed engineering, design and construction management, while consortium partners Montacier Inc. and Demathieu & Bard S.A. provided erecting and precasting services, respectively. The project is the largest bridge rehabilitation ever undertaken in Canada.
“By using a state-of-the-art precast concrete integral deck system, SNC-Lavalin demonstrated the kind of engineering innovations that will further advance major bridge rehabilitation work,” said Normand Morin, Executive Vice-President, SNC-Lavalin Group Inc.
The Jacques Cartier Bridge was selected from among 138 entries as the “Best Rehabilitated Bridge” of the year at PCI’s annual award ceremony in Orlando, Florida, earlier this month. Every year, PCI’s award program recognizes design excellence in the use of precast/prestressed concrete throughout Canada, the United States and Mexico.
SNC-Lavalin (TSX: SNC) is one of the leading groups of engineering and construction companies in the world, a global leader in the ownership and management of infrastructure, and a key player in facilities and operations management. The SNC-Lavalin companies have offices across Canada and in 30 other countries around the world and are currently working in some 100 countries.
