SNC-LAVALIN PLANTS TREES AROUND THE WORLD TO MARK WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
SNC-Lavalinís President and CEO, Jacques Lamarre, launched the Companyís first worldwide tree planting initiative at noon today by planting a Red Ash tree next to SNC-Lavalinís head office in Montreal.
In similar ceremonies at offices and near project sites around the world, members of SNC-Lavalinís senior management planted trees at noon local time to mark the United Nationís World Environment Day. All told, more than 1,200 trees were planted in 21 cities and at numerous project sites in Canada, the US, Europe, South America, Africa and Asia. In Australia and the UK, SNC-Lavalin offices are participating in tree planting sponsorship programs in Perth and London.
Earlier today, nearly 4,000 seedlings were handed out to employees around the world so they could also plant trees at home or in designated areas. The initiative is part of a week-long series of activities the Company developed for National Environment Week in Canada, June 4 to 8.
"Planting trees is one way we can help reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and I think itís our responsibility as a large company to set a good example," said Mr Lamarre. "The seedlings we distribute to employees on Environment Day, this year and every year from now on, will help our efforts to control climate change by absorbing CO2."
Canada celebrates Environment Week the first week of June every year to coincide with the UNís Environment Day, which is commemorated each year on June 5. Information on both these events can be found on the following Web sites:
